Is Referring to the Form and “Reality” of Actions an Innovation?

February 1st, 2008

Someone asked whether the differentiation made by the scholars between the form and reality of actions was somehow an innovation (bid`a).

I asked them to consider the migration (hijra) of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Outwardly–in form–the migration was from Mecca to Medina. However, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) himself told us about the reality of the migration, in the hadith of intention:

“… So whoever’s migration was to Allah and His Messenger, then their migration was, indeed, to Allah and His Messenger. And whoever’s migration was to attain some worldly matter or to marry some woman, then their migration was indeed to whatever they migrated for.”

The reality of our actions is what we perform them for. Without this reality, they’re merely lifeless forms.

As Ibn Ata’illah reminded us,

“Actions are but lifeless forms whose soul is the secret of sincerity within them.”

And Allah alone gives success.

Can the existence of God be proven rationally? - SunniPath Answers

SunniPath Answers:
Can the existence of God be proven rationally?
Answered by Faraz Rabbani

Question: Is the existence of Allah and His attributes rationally provable with the mind without doubt - since iman is based on taklif.

Or is Allah’s existence just a guess that we take hoping it is true with a certainty (the Christian concept of “leap of faith.”)

Dealing with Non-Muslims — Rock and Killing Jews

Question:
From what I have read and what I know about Islam, it teaches to respect and befriend “people of the book.” But I have recently read some troubling hadith which speak of fighting Jews in the end of days. The one which most bothers me is the one that says “even the rocks will shout ‘o believer! there is a jew behind me,” asking him to come kill the jew. Could some one please explain these to me?

What is the basis of Muslims dealing with non-Muslims

Is it proper to use your cell phone to check voicemail while someone is speaking?

The sunna of the Messenger of Allah (peace
and blessings be upon him) exemplifies excellence in all
matters–whether worship, dealings, conduct, or character.

The sunna of social interaction is normally to give one’s full
attention to the person whom one is addressing. It is mentioned in the
descriptions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon
him) that when he would turn to someone, he would turn completely,
[Sunan al-Tirmidhi, 3571] giving his full attention to them. [read more]

How does reciting the Holy Quran help one? What benefit does it bring one?

Allah explains this in the Qur’an:

“This is the Book in which there is no doubt, a guidance unto those who are god-fearing. Who believe in the Unseen, and establish worship, and spend of that We have bestowed upon them; And who believe in that which is revealed unto You (Muhammad) and that which was revealed before thee, and are certain of the Hereafter. These depend on guidance from their Lord. These are the successful.” [2.2-5] ….

An Intimate Calling Upon the Beloved Messenger of Allah

June 20th, 2006

A dear, respected brother was offended at the suggestion that it was being implied that Imam Ashraf Ali al-Tahanawi permitted calling upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) unconditionally. I am not implying that–rather, his way appears to have been of general discouragement of this, at least for the masses. (This poem has been posted before, but I can’t access the old post due to blog problems.) I am simply (a) quoting a beautiful poem; and (b) mentioning the madhhab of the vast majority of late Sunni scholarship that permitted calling upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) if done without wrongful beliefs. As for what past or present scholars of particular respected Sunni maslaks have said, then ask them….

An Intimate Calling
from the Wird Book of Imam Ashraf Ali al-Tahanawi

Translated by Faraz Rabbani, (c) 2006

O Messenger of Allah, I come to you seeking refuge
May my Lord’s blessings be upon you and all peace

I come distressed, seeking assistance and succor
For a soul that wrongs despite not having been wronged

O Messenger of Allah, I come to you seeking your protection
And your Lord grants you protection and you can’t be let down

O Messenger of Allah, I come to you as a guest
And the rights of guests are known to those noble

I come to you indigent and needy
With a soul possessing only tremendous sins

A stranger who has come from a strange land
Without any companions or partners

…..

Help me, O Messenger of Allah, for I
Am at a loss, and despair has reached my very bones

Grant mercy, O Son of Aminah, grant mercy
For in sin have I been nursed and grown

It is your intercession I seek in distress and ease
And your healing when sickness befalls me

You are my support when darkness befalls
And in struggles you are my sure sword

If you seek forgiveness for me, O Master, even once
I’ll be of those upright on religion

Every limb of mine obeys you as if a slave
And in my heart love for you is constant

O God grant me success throughout my life
To pray weeping while others are asleep.
