TRAVELLING LIGHT :: Lecture Series on Imam Ghazali’s Ihya’ `Ulum al-Din

The Travelling Light Project intends to release a series of forty lectures in DVD format, covering each of the forty ‘Books’ of this Islamic classic.
Speakers are chosen for their deep knowledge of the text, and for their continuity with ancient chains of transmission going back from teacher to teacher, to the Imam himself.
The locations chosen represent the diversity and beauty of the settings where the Ihya has been taught. They include historic mosques, tekkes, and khanqahs which are showcases of Islamic art and architecture.
Each lecture begins with a recitation from the Holy Qur’an, and includes songs drawn from the indigenous spiritual culture which has flourished in the lands where the lectures are taking place.
Some of the films include interviews with local experts and scholars who explain the impact of Imam al-Ghazali’s work in their communities.
All proceeds from sale and broadcast of these films are donated to the Cambridge New Mosque Project

Ramadan Reminders 22: Concern for the Halal & Haram
Remaining within the limits of Allah with respect to the lawful (halal) and prohibited (haram) is of the most important of matters; a religious duty; and a key to drawing closer to Allah. This brief reminder discusses central aspects of that in one’s life, and why this is something to pay attention to in the closing days of Ramadan.

Reaction from the Speakers on the United Against Malaria Event » United For Change

Reaction from the Speakers on the United Against Malaria Event » United For Change
“It was indeed an historic event! I LOVED the entirety of it. The articulation of the speakers was simply superb! I was blown away by the information given, and the profound commitment of the organizers for the cause of those with malaria. I don’t know if I have ever heard, and been more affected by a speech then that of the one given by professor Fatimah Jackson! I thank Allah for the organizers! Let’s do it again!” - Imam Siraj Wahhaj
“It was an informative program with inspiring steps towards Muslims engaging in global health issues.” - Imam Mohamed Magid
“It was my honor to attend the United Against Malaria launch in our nation’s capital. I was thrilled to join this unprecedented, formal effort by US-based Muslims to join the global movement against malaria. Indeed this work represents our greatest hope for the first humanitarian breakthrough of the century. The conference was well-organized and presented the diverse aspects of this cause as well as how the community can impact the movement. Many thanks to the coordinating committee, Imam Zaid Shakir and Islamic Relief for their tremendous commitment and remarkable leadership.” - Saleemah Abdul-Ghaffur
“The United Against Malaria event was one of the most memorable programs I’ve participated in or attended. It was significant not only because we raised almost $200,000 to combat malaria, but because there was a spirit of love, mutual concern, and a deep sense of the need for unity and cooperation that was manifest throughout. For me, the personal highlight of the program was going for a walk (and some ice cream) the night before the event with Shaykh Yasir Qadhi, in which we discussed some of the most pressing larger religious concerns of the Muslim community in North America–especially in terms of meaningful means of Islamic Finance, and some of the critical legal issues related to marriage–and how we must work together to address them. May Allah make this event the first step in our uniting for change, and in becoming of those who promote justice and good with excellence, in accordance with the radiant example of our Beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).” - Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

The Guardian
It’s time. Long past time. The best strategy to end the increasingly bloody occupation
is for Israel to become the target of the kind of global movement that put an end to apartheid in South Africa. In July 2005 a huge coalition of Palestinian groups laid out plans to do just that. They called on ‘people of conscience all over the world to impose broad boycotts and implement divestment initiatives against Israel similar to those applied to South Africa in the apartheid era’. The campaign Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions was born.

Ramadan Reminders (10): Faith, Character, and Marriage
An explanation of the Prophet’s saying (peace and blessings be upon him) that, “The believers most perfect in faith are those best in character, and the most virtuous of you are those most virtuous to their spouses.” [Tirmidhi] Why is excellence of character the best of faith — and greater in reward and consequences — than the outward acts of worship? The relationship of excellence of character and sincerity is explained, as well as the highest of good character: forbearance (hilm).
