SeekersGuidance Islamic Knowledge Podcast

Understanding Virtue through the Prophetic Teachings (Lesson Thirteen): In this lesson Shaykh Faraz discusses the importance of the Friday prayer, how it may expiate our sins, and some etiquette pertaining to it. Abu Hurayra (Allah be pleased with him) relates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whoever performs ritual ablution and does so well, and then goes to the Friday prayer, listens, and is attentive shall have all their sins between that Friday and the previous Friday as well as three extra days. And whoever touches pebbles has idled.” [Muslim and others]

Islamic Beliefs for Seekers: Dardir’s Kharida Explained - (with Faraz Rabbani) SeekersGuidance.com

Islamic Beliefs for Seekers: Dardir’s Kharida Explained
This course aims to enhance ones understanding of Islamic Beliefs and will cover one of the foremost core texts (mutun) in Islamic beliefs, Imam Ahmad al-Dardir’s al-Kharida al-Bahiyya.

Lesson Sample: How “La ilaha illa’l Llah” Summarizes all Belief

This course will cover one of the foremost core texts (mutun) in
Islamic beliefs, Imam Ahmad al-Dardir’s al-Kharida al-Bahiyya, with the
goal of giving us a solid understanding of:

(1) The essential beliefs–we must believe about Allah, Prophets, and
Transmitted Matters–with clarity and depth, as transmitted by the
great imams of Islam.

(2) The underlying methodology of mainstream Islamic beliefs—the way of
the Ash`aris and Maturidis—including the breakdown of rational and
normative rulings, which is the basis of sound reasoning, and a brief
overview of traditional Islamic logic.

(3) The centrality of transcendence (tanzih) in sound beliefs, and its
clear Qur’anic basis, through investigation of the verses some
interpret in ways that entail affirming similitude between Allah and
His creation (tashbih, anthropomorphism).

(4) How the traditional understanding of Islamic beliefs assists in
bringing one’s faith to life, and is a means towards realization and
understanding of the light of the Qur’an and Prophetic example.

Eliyahu advocates carpet bombing Gaza | Israel | Jerusalem Post

Former Sephardi chief Rabbi...All civilians living in Gaza are collectively guilty for Kassam attacks on Sderot, former Sephardi chief rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu has written in a letter to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

Eliyahu ruled that there was absolutely no moral prohibition against the indiscriminate killing of civilians during a potential massive military offensive on Gaza aimed at stopping the rocket launchings.

The letter, published in Olam Katan [Small World], a weekly pamphlet to be distributed in synagogues nationwide this Friday, cited the biblical story of the Shechem massacre (Genesis 34) and Maimonides’ commentary (Laws of Kings 9, 14) on the story as proof texts for his legal decision.

Children are born believers in God, academic claims - Telegraph

Children are born believers in God

Dr Justin Barrett, a senior researcher at the University of Oxford’s Centre for Anthropology and Mind, claims that young people have a predisposition to believe in a supreme being because they assume that everything in the world was created with a purpose.

He says that young children have faith even when they have not been taught about it by family or at school, and argues that even those raised alone on a desert island would come to believe in God.

Shaykh Yahya Rhodus Online Course - Ghazali’s Book on Faith in Divine Unity and Absolute Trust - SeekersGuidance (www.SeekersGuidance.com)

May 23, 2009 by Faraz Rabbani · Leave a Comment

In Whom Do You Trust?

Shaykh Yahya Rhodus is an amazing teacher and person, someone who has the spiritual depth and insight to meaningfully explain one of the deepest and most moving books within Imam Ghazali’s Ihya’… Not to be missed.

In Whom Do You Trust?

Faith in Divine Unity and Trust in Divine Providence

Unwavering belief in Divine Unity and absolute trust in Divine
Providence are the pivots on which Allah’s religion turns. It is
therefore no surprise that Imam al-Ghazali dedicated to them an entire book (Book XXXV) of his masterpiece, Revival of the Religious Sciences (Ihya’ `Ulum al-Din).

In an all-new online course at SeekersGuidance, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus carefully guides students through this important book and explains the meanings of these two pivots: tawhid and tawakkul.
He sheds light on how both formal religious knowledge and one’s inner
state of being have to be combined in pursuit of the Ultimate Reality
in our daily lives.

The first of the two key concepts covered in the course, Faith in Divine Unity (tawhid) is the essence of true monotheism.  At its highest degree, tawhid
is to know that Allah Most High is the lone Causer and Effecter of all
things, and that there is no real Doer other than him.  In his book,
Imam al-Ghazali masterfully provides answers to many existential
questions that typically arise in this context: Why is there spiritual
reward and punishment?  What is the point of Sacred Law if Allah Most
High has the ultimate control over one’s destiny? If one has been
destined with hardship in this world, what is the benefit of striving?

The second concept, absolute trust in Allah (tawakkul) is
one of the stations of the servant’s heart, and among the waymarks of
true faith.  Its essence is to relegate the entirety of one’s affairs
to Allah Most High to the exclusion of one’s own caprice and
preferences.  Regarding the importance of tawakkul in our
daily affairs, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant
him peace) said: “If you had trusted in Allah Most High as is His
right, He would have given you your sustenance as He does to the birds
that fly every morning out of their nests hungry, with empty stomachs,
and return in the evening satiated, with stomachs that are full.”

This course is recommended for both beginners and advanced
seekers of knowledge.  Practical skills will be outlined to aid the
seeker in dealing with events and circumstances as they occur in their
daily lives.

Some specific topics covered in this course include:

- Virtue of Trust
- True nature of the faith in Divine Unity upon which Trust is built
- Other beliefs upon which Trust is built
- Degrees of Trust
- Acts of Trust
- Remedy for lack of Trust in Allah

CNN: Islamic Finance - Religion and Money: The price of faith

Religion and Money: The price of faith - May. 13, 2009

(Money Magazine) — Kashif Saroya held out against getting a credit
card for as long as he could. As a Muslim, he was mindful of the
prohibition in the Qur’an, Islam’s holiest book, against paying or
receiving riba, usually understood as interest. That meant no plastic.

But
just saying no to credit in a country that runs on it was a lot harder
than Saroya anticipated - as he learned one day in 2003, five years
after leaving Pakistan to study and work in the U.S.

The
Minneapolis resident needed to rent a car to pick up his parents, who
were flying to America to visit him for the first time. But the rental
agent wouldn’t hand over the vehicle without a credit card. Panicked
that he’d leave his parents stranded, Kashif got a friend to rent the
car and let him sign on as a second driver. A few days later he applied
for his own Visa. Just in case.

Saroya and his wife, Lori, both
28, constantly feel the tug between their desire to adhere to the
teachings of Islam and the practical realities of life in the modern
U.S.

The Associated Press: US scholars planning Islamic college

A group of American Muslims, led by two prominent scholars, is moving closer to fulfilling a vision of founding the first four-year accredited Islamic college in the United States, what some are calling a “Muslim Georgetown.”

Advisers to the project have scheduled a June vote to decide whether the proposed Zaytuna College can open in the fall of next year, a major step toward developing the faith in America.

Some Thoughts on the Lost Art of Reading Aloud - NYTimes.com

Editorial Notebook - Some Thoughts on the Lost Art of Reading Aloud - NYTimes.com

Sometimes the best way to understand the present is to look at it from the past. Consider audio books. An enormous number of Americans read by listening these days — listening aloud, I call it. The technology for doing so is diverse and widespread, and so are the places people listen to audio books. But from the perspective of a reader in, say, the early 19th century, about the time of Jane Austen, there is something peculiar about it, even lonely.

In those days, literate families and friends read aloud to each other as a matter of habit. Books were still relatively scarce and expensive, and the routine electronic diversions we take for granted were, of course, nonexistent. If you had grown up listening to adults reading to each other regularly, the thought of all of those solitary 21st-century individuals hearkening to earbuds and car radios would seem isolating. It would also seem as though they were being trained only to listen to books and not to read aloud from them.

Raising Upright Children: A New Course on Islamic Parenting

When it comes to parenting advice, there is no shortage of opinions. But which of them is most appropriate for Muslim parents today?

Raising the next generation of believers is one of the most noble and most important tasks many of us have been or will be blessed with. Imparting children with God consciousness, sound values, and proper manners is a trust from Allah, and therefore should not be taken lightly.

This Summer SeekersGuidance is pleased to present a new course which will offer parents and guardians parenting advice based on the Book and the Prophetic example (may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). In this 12-week course, students will study a classical text on Islamic parenting (Simt al-`Uqyan) by Imam Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Ramli, one of the leading authorities of the Shafi`i school in the tenth century AH, and its commentary by the Yemeni scholar Shaykh Abdullah ibn Ahmad Basudan. They will learn how to:
  • Inculcate Islamic manners and the Prophetic character in their children
  • Provide children with sound Islamic education
  • Raise a spiritual child who loves Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him)
  • Protect one’s children from negative influences, and
  • Discipline children when necessary
Our course instructors — Shaykh Faraz Rabbani and Ustadha Shireen Ahmed – are currently raising and homeschooling their own three children in Toronto, Canada, and are therefore in the best position to address contemporary issues and challenges facing Muslim parents and educators in the West. Final lessons of this course will focus on this practical aspect of parenting.

Rise to the Occasion - Be one of 200 to raise $50 each to Support the HelpImamSiraj.com Drive…

May 13, 2009 by Faraz Rabbani · 1 Comment

The American Ummah should be ashamed! - Where are 200 believers!? (190 left!) | MR’s Blog

MR says:

MR’s online fundraiser for Imam Siraj Wahhaj from MR on Vimeo.

I recorded the video late last night after being inspired by one of the brothers who organized HelpImamSiraj.com.

I am looking for 199 people to donate $50 for this cause. Imam Siraj Wahhaj (may Allah preserve him) has raised millions of dollars since the 80s, 90s and in the current decade. He has raised money for ISNA, ICNA, MAS, CAIR, MSA National and MSAs across the country. He has visited hundreds of Islamic centers and Islamic schools to help them fund raise money in order for Islam to spread in this country and to make it easy for Muslims to live here.

When he is need and suffering we are struggling just to give him a few dollars. Literally it is just a few dollars. It’s just pocket change for us. Alhamdulillah HelpImamSiraj.com has raised around $80,000 but they need more. I think the total cost is around $150,000. MuslimMatters.org has raised $5,000, and a few MSAs on the west coast have also raised around $4,000 to $6,000.

I want to topple this goal with $10,000 inshaAllah! It’s very easy. All we need is 200 people to each donate $50. It doesn’t matter how old you are because even a 14 year old can afford it (see video above for details). I’ll post your name below and a link to your site if you want to. You don’t have to write your name either. You can be anonymous or use an anonymous nickname. If you can’t donate $50, I am almost positive you can find someone amongst your family and friends that can donate.

Lastly, a non-Muslim donated $1,000 for Imam Siraj. If a non-Muslim can donate this much, then surely you can afford $50 for a man who has done more than enough for the American Muslim Ummah.

How to donate:

Go to HelpImamSiraj.com and on the right side you will see a donate button. Click that and enter $50 as the amount if donating from your bank account. If using a credit card then donate $51.75. You can also mail a check to Siraj Wahhaj, P.O. Box 312264, Atlanta, GA 31131.
